PASSPORT APPLICANT DISABILITY ACCOMODATIONS

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Applicants
For applicants who are deaf or hard of hearing, the passport agent may use American Sign Language (ASL) to
provide appropriate customer service and administer the oath, if the agent is proficient in ASL. Alternatively,
the passport agent may use appropriate technological devices, if available and if requested. A friend or family
member may also interpret for the applicant during any communication with the agent, including administering
the oath, so long as both the applicant and interpreter consent. Alternatively, communication may be done
writing. The applicant will need to sign documentation that will be attached to the passport application
documenting the assistance that was provided.

Blind or Low Vision Applicants
Appropriate technological aids may be provided to assist applicants completing the passport application, if they
are available and if requested. A friend or family member may also assist the applicant, but only if they both
consent. Alternatively, the passport agent may complete the form for the applicant and then a second passport
agent will accept the application after reading back the completed information on the application to the
applicant to confirm it is accurate before the applicant signs. The applicant will need to sign documentation
that will be attached to the passport application documenting the assistance that was provided.
Applicants that require assistance from the passport agent will need to request the accommodation that is
needed in the note section on the appointment schedule when scheduling an appointment. Assistance
requests to the Town of Bennett will need to be received five (5) days prior to the appointment so that the
Town of Bennett has sufficient time to make the necessary arrangements for the requested accommodation.

Which application form do I need?

Please see the U.S. Department of State’s website to determine which form you will need.

Most passport forms are available at travel.state.gov, or on site at the time of your appointment.

Please be wary of websites that charge for passport applications - you should never have to pay to complete any passport forms.

How much will my passport cost?

Exact fees depend on the type of passport (book, card, or both) you’re applying for, and how quickly you need it.

A fee calculator is available here.

How long will it take to process my passport?

Processing times begin the day the U.S. Department of State receives your application, not the day you apply for a passport at this local acceptance facility. Please plan your travel accordingly.

The Town of Bennett office cannot process Urgent or Emergency Travel passport requests. Please contact the U.S. Department of State Passport Agency at 1-877-487-2778.

Can I track my passport application?

Approximately a week after your appointment, you can track the status of your application by calling: 1-877-487-2778 or by visiting www.passportstatus.state.gov

What is the difference between a passport book and a passport card?

The passport book is accepted for any kind of travel, anywhere in the world.

Passport cards are only accepted for land or sea travel, and only within Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

If you are planning to fly internationally, you must have a passport book.

What methods of payment do you accept?

The Department of State fee must be paid by check (personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's) or money order. There are no exceptions. If your appointment is for multiple applicants, you can combine the Department of State fees in one check or money order.

The Town of Bennett fees can be paid with any form of payment.

Can I make an appointment if I'm not a resident of Bennett

Yes. There are no residency requirements for passport services.

Do I need to make an appointment for a renewal?

Yes. Regardless of whether you’re renewing an adult or minor passport, you will need to make an appointment in order for us to assist you with filling out your form or taking a picture.

However, we will not take your renewal application or send it in for you. You must follow the instructions for sending in your renewal application at travel.state.gov

Do I need to renew my passport before it expires?

No. There is no requirement to renew a passport prior to the expiration date. Adult passports can be renewed by mail for up to 5 years after expiration. Minor passports, and adult passports that have been expired more than 5 years, must be renewed in person. For more information, please see the Department of State's website.

What are the requirements for pictures?

Do not wear a white shirt.

Glasses will have to be removed.

Hats, scarves, and other head coverings must be removed (except in certain religious exceptions).

No military or other type of uniform may be worn.
