The Colorado Department of Transportation and Ralph L. Wadsworth will begin work March 4, 2024 to replace the aging concrete panels along I-70 eastbound and westbound from Bennett to Deer Trail in Arapahoe County. The project is scheduled for completion on May 3, 2024.

Why is the project needed?

The original pavement was built in 1991. The I-70 driving surfaces are deteriorating, requiring multiple repairs. They need to be permanently replaced for the long-term safety of the traveling public and will also improve driving surface conditions.

How will the project be delivered?

Pavement reconstruction: Crews will start replacing panels on westbound I-70 near Deer Trail (Mile Point 325) to Bennett (MP 305). Once the panels are replaced on the westbound side, then eastbound work will follow, starting at Bennett (MP 305) and ending at Deer Trail (MP 325).

How will traffic be impacted during construction?

  • Starting March 4, single lane closure in a one-mile increment in one direction of I-70 from 7 a.m. Monday to noon Friday each week until the project is done in late May. There will be no lane closures during the weekends, holidays or adverse weather conditions.
  • Work begins on westbound I-70 near Deer Trail (MP 325). There will be a single lane closure for a length of one mile. Once panels are replaced in that mile-long segment, then the single lane closure will shift for another mile increment in the westbound direction.
  • After panels are replaced on the westbound side from Deer Trail to Bennett, then crews will shift to the eastbound side, with a single lane closure beginning at Bennett.
  • Motorists should be prepared for minimum traffic impacts with possible delays during the morning and evening peak travel periods.
  • Speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 65 mph.
  • It's extremely important that motorists pay close attention while traveling in the work zone, heed the speed limit, leave ample following space and watch for crew members.
  • Refer to COtrip.org for real-time travel conditions and road closures.
